To his mind, the attempt to isolate the Russian Federation and the sanctions against it have failed, but negotiations with Moscow would help in the joint struggle against terrorism.
The Italian authorities should try to return Russia as a member of The Group of eight. Such statement was made by the former Prime Minister Romano Prody, who was also the head of the European Commission before. He wrote the article for the newspaper “Messaggero”.
He explained his proposal as the need to get ahead of the new President of the United States Donald Trump in the improvement of the relationships with Russia. However, this specific intention of the American leader opens the possibility for returning of The Group of eight format.
Prody thinks, that negotiations in the format of G8 would settle the situation in the Ukraine, also in the struggle against terrorism in the Middle East. However, the question is: will the president of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin accept the invitation for the Summit without sanctions being lifted from Russia.
Prody has already appealed to the removal of the sanctions from Russia as quickly as possible, to get ahead of Trump.
